Teeth whitening treatments are one of the most commonly requested procedures at Peach Family Dental Group. Dr. Katie Mathews Garvin D.M.D and our staff believes that Fort Valley patients should have smiles that they love to show off. While we offer a range of cosmetic dentistry services to makeover any smile, teeth whitening is the most popular because of the quick and noticeable results.
There are many over-the-counter products that are designed to be used at home without the need for supervision by a dentist. However, these over-the-counter products cannot provide the same level of whitening strength as the professional-grade treatments provided at Peach Family Dental Group. Additionally, the products available in stores take a longer time to garner noticeable whitening.
At our Fort Valley office, our teeth bleaching products have concentrations of hydrogen peroxide ranging from 25% to 40%. Teeth bleaching products sold in stores typically have concentrations of 3.5% or less. Before the bleaching product is applied by Dr. Katie Mathews Garvin D.M.D or a member of our dental staff, a protective gel is applied to the gums. Whitening procedures in our office often only take one hour and only need to be repeated if the desired level of whitening is not achieved.
Our office uses several methods: passive tray whitening, and professional strength white strips.
The tray method involves having impressions taken from which laboratory fabricated custom vinyl trays are made. A carbamide peroxide gel is placed in these trays and the trays with gel are worn for about 3 hours, or overnight. The entire process takes 3-4 weeks of daily use. Three different strengths of gel may be used, however the higher the strength the greater the likelihood of reactions or tooth sensitivity. The tray method is recommended for badly stained teeth, such as tetracycline staining, and it may take several months of use to see significant color improvement. For maintenance of whitened teeth the trays should be used every several months.
The end results whether using trays at home or doing Zoom! is the same. The cost of the tray method is about half compared to Zoom!, and there is usually less post-treatment sensitivity.
After your professional whitening appointment, you may wish to purchase whitening products from our Fort Valley office. At Peach Family Dental Group staff can recommend the appropriate product for you to use at regular intervals to keep your smile bright.
